Social Networking Learning Activities
Statistical Graphs
Lesson Overview
This lesson will require students to use social media to gather data for use in completing dot plots, histograms and box plots. It is the culminating activity for this Common Core Standard.
Content Area and Grade Level
Algebra / Grades 8-10
Objectives
Students will use real-life data to complete a dot plot, histogram and box plot.
Students will use mean, median and mode to compare groups of data from different areas (states, or countries).
Students will identify any outliers and successfully describe their impact on the data.

Standards
Summarize, represent, and interpret data on a single count or measurement variable
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSS.ID.A.1
Represent data with plots on the real number line (dot plots, histograms, and box plots).
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSS.ID.A.2
Use statistics appropriate to the shape of the data distribution to compare center (median, mean) and spread (interquartile range, standard deviation) of two or more different data sets.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSS.ID.A.3
Interpret differences in shape, center, and spread in the context of the data sets, accounting for possible effects of extreme data points (outliers).

Relative Advantage
Integrating social media into this activity allows students to gather data from a widespread area in a short amount of time. By incorporating media such as Twitter, students will be able to compare statistics from all over the world, instead of only from the small area they live in.
Timeline
2 - 3 forty-minute class periods
*The call for data will be put out at least one week before this activity begins to allow time for data collection.

Assessment
Assessment will be in the form of a discussion on Google+ in our classroom circle. Students will post a reflection of what they learned and must respond to at least two posts from their peers.
